Wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan has admitted that he didn’t expect to be picked in the Pakistan team so early on.

This comes after he was included in the T20 squad for the upcoming tours of England and the West Indies.

Azam, who is the son of former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan, has been turning heads with his performances in domestic cricket.

In the Pakistan Cup, the 22-year-old accumulated 186 runs in seven games for Sindh, which included a top score of 69, at an average of 46.50 and a strike-rate of 124.83.

As for the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL), he has scored 174 runs in 10 matches for the Quetta Gladiators, which includes a top score of 47, at an average of 17.40 and a strike-rate of 133.84.

“I was having breakfast when Nabeel (Quetta’s media manager) bhai told me about my selection [in the] Pakistan T20I squad. At first I thought he was joking. Then, I left my breakfast and straight away went to my father and that was an emotional movie moment,” he said in a video released by the Gladiators as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.

“I wasn’t expecting to be selected so early. I am happy because my hard work for the past year has paid off.”
