Legendary Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar recalled how he nearly killed former West Indies batsman Brian Lara with a lethal bouncer.

Recalling a deadly bouncer that struck Lara on the back of the neck, Akhtar admitted that he was seriously concerned about Lara when he collapsed.

However, Lara made a full recovery and Akhtar was thankful that “he didn’t die”.

The incident occurred in the second semi-final of the 2004 Champions Trophy, which the West Indies won by seven wickets.

“I bowled Lara a bouncer that hit him on his neck, he was badly hurt and fell unconscious before being rushed to the hospital. Thank God he didn’t die because if the ball had hit him just inches towards the head, his skull bone would have been broken and thank God it didn’t happen,” Akhtar was quoted as saying by the Business Recorder.

After winning their semi-final against Pakistan, the West Indies went on to beat England by two wickets in the final to win the Champions Trophy.
