Nightwatchman Jack Leach scored a career-best 92 and debutant Jason Roy struck an entertaining 72 as England built a 181-run lead on the second day against Ireland at Lord’s.

Starting off the day on 0/0, England lost opener Rory Burns early on as he was caught behind off the bowling of Boyd Rankin for six runs.

Leach and Roy made up for the loss of Burns with a 145-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their half-centuries.

Roy ended up making a 78-ball 72, which included 10 boundaries and a six, before he was clean bowled by Stuart Thompson.

Leach went on to score 92, which came off 162 deliveries and included 16 boundaries, was caught by debutant Mark Adair at slip off the bowling of Tim Murtagh.

England began to lose wickets at regular intervals following Leach’s dismissal as Joe Denly was run out by Kevin O’Brien for 10 runs, while Bairstow was trapped lbw off the bowling of Adair for a duck.

Moeen Ali only mustered nine runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Rankin, while captain Joe Root was caught behind off the bowling of Adair after scoring 31.

Adair also took out Chris Woakes before Sam Curran and Stuart Broad added 45 runs to the score.

Curran ended up smashing a 29-ball 37 before he was dismissed by Thompson.

Broad and debutant Olly Stone forged an unbeaten 10-run partnership before rain brought things to an end for the day.

Broad finished on 21, which came off 25 balls and included two boundaries and a six, while Stone has yet to get off the mark.

Adair was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Rankin and Thompson took two wickets apiece. As for Murtagh, he claimed one.

England ended day two on 303/9 and will continue batting on Friday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
