India opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup after he suffered a hairline fracture to his left thumb.

Dhawan sustained the injury after he was hit by a short-pitched delivery from Australia pace bowler Pat Cummins on June 9.

Dhawan continued batting despite the blow and went on to score a 109-ball 117, which saw India defeat Australia by 36 runs and Dhawan earn the Man of the Match award.

With Dhawan out for the rest of the tournament, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been confirmed as his replacement.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) brought Pant is as a potential replacement for Dhawan on June 11 and board has now received approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for Pant to replace the 33-year-old opener.

“Shikhar has a fracture at the base of his first metacarpal on his left hand [thumb]. Following several specialist opinions, he will remain in a cast until July, mid-July, which rules him out of the ICC World Cup 2019,” India team manager Sunil Subramaniam was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Dhawan expressed his disappointment on Twitter, saying: “I feel emotional to announce that I will no longer be a part of World Cup. Unfortunately, the thumb won’t recover [in] time. But the show must go on.. I’m grateful for all the love and support from my teammates, cricket lovers and our entire nation. Jai Hind!”

Pant trained with the India team ahead of their highly-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

As for Dhawan, his hand is expected to remain in a cast until after the World Cup concludes on July 14.

India’s next World Cup match will be against Afghanistan in Southampton on Saturday.
