Sanjay Manjrekar: “Sarfraz Ahmed is no Imran Khan, he is not going to take Pakistan to the next level”

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has made it abundantly clear that Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed cannot be compared to Imran Khan.

Manjrekar noted that Imran, who captained Pakistan to World Cup glory in 1992 and is the country’s current Prime Minister, almost “brainwashed” his side “into believing they were better than everyone”.

However, when talking about Sarfraz, Manjrekar feels that the 32-year-old “is not going to take Pakistan to the next level”.

Manjrekar’s brutally honest thoughts about Sarfraz come after Pakistan lost to arch-rivals India by 89 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in their World Cup clash on Sunday.

India’s victory extended their unbeaten streak against Pakistan as they have now won all seven of their meetings against their arch-rivals in the World Cup.

To make matters worse, Pakistan have now only won one of the five World Cup games they have played.

“Imran Khan inspired his team, almost brainwashed them into believing they were better than everyone,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying by Saj Sadiq on Twitter. “It helped that there was [a] great, natural ability already there. All it needed was the right channelling and cricket sophistication and Imran took care of that.

“Sarfraz Ahmed is no Imran Khan, he is not going to take Pakistan to the next level, and to be fair blaming him for the loss at Old Trafford is silly. India was a much stronger side and there was not much Sarfraz could do about it.”

Pakistan’s next World Cup match will be against South Africa at Lord’s on Sunday.
