Imam-ul-Haq believes his role as an opening batsman in the Pakistan team is extremely important as he is responsible for ensuring the men in green get off to good starts.

Imam noted that if he and his opening partner Fakhar Zaman both excel with the bat, Pakistan will have a solid platform to build on.

“If you see, teams have succeeded in the World Cup only when the top three players have done well. If your openers do well, then you’re 95 percent good. We try not to give wickets in the first 10 overs and then once you’re set, try to play the full 50 overs so that it gives a platform to the team,” Imam was quoted as saying by The News International.

The 23-year-old, who averages 57.32 in ODIs, also made it clear that he learns from the mistakes he makes.

“Everyone learns from [their] mistakes. It is part of every walk of life. I never said that I don’t make mistakes, but I always try to learn from them and not to repeat them again,” Imam, who scored two and 44 in Pakistan’s World Cup matches against the West Indies and England, said.

Pakistan’s third World Cup match against Sri Lanka was washed out and their next game will be against Australia in Taunton on Wednesday.
