South Africa have been dealt a major blow as pace bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.
Steyn, who will be replaced by left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks, suffered the injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) and subsequently cut his stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore short.
Steyn has had a recurrence of the shoulder injury he had surgery for in 2016 and is likely to be out of action for the foreseeable future.
He had already missed the first two World Cup games South Africa played against England and Bangladesh.
Hendricks made his ODI debut in January and has taken one wicket in the two ODIs he has played to date.
South Africa’s next World Cup match will be against India in Southampton on Wednesday.
