Mohammad Sami: “I can’t say if the decision to include the duo in the team is good or not”

Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Sami is unsure whether the national team made the right decision by including left-arm seamers Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz in the finalised World Cup squad.

Amir initially failed to make the cut as there were concerns over the fact that since the conclusion of the Champions Trophy in 2017, he had only taken five wickets in 15 ODIs at an average of 92.60.

Wahab was initially not included in the list of 23 probables for the World Cup, but was the third-highest wicket-taker in this year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) with 17 wickets in 13 games for the Peshawar Zalmi at an average of 19.88.

However, both of them were included in the finalised World Cup squad, along with big-hitting batsman Asif Ali.

With the trio coming in, left-arm pace bowler Junaid Khan, all-rounder Faheem Ashraf and opener Abid Ali were axed from the side.

But, Sami noted that only time will tell whether Amir and Wahab’s inclusion in the side was the right move.

“I can’t say if the decision to include the duo in the team is good or not. Only time will tell if they’re good for Pakistan or not, so [we will have to] wait and see,” Sami told Geo.tv.

Pakistan will play two World Cup warm-up games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Bristol and Cardiff on May 24 and 26 respectively.

They will then begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
