Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur has admitted that left-arm seamer Mohamamd Amir was not picked in the World Cup squad due to his lack of wickets since the conclusion of the Champions Trophy in 2017.

Amir was left out of Pakistan’s World Cup team when it was announced last month.

Amir’s form in ODIs has been dismal since the conclusion of the Champions Trophy in June 2017 as he has taken five wickets in 14 matches at an average of 92.60.

However, Pakistan are allowed to make changes to their side without permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) until May 23.

As a result, Amir could potentially get into the team if he excels during the ongoing five-match ODI series against England.

“Amir is a wonderful bowler. When he gets it right, his skill level is amazing so we hope he regains his bowling form,” Arthur told Sky Sports as quoted by cricketpakistan.com.pk. “However his performance since the Champions Trophy has been below par which made it difficult to select him.

“Although Amir hasn’t picked up many wickets, his economy of 4.7 since the Champions Trophy has been impressive. However, we need strike bowlers who are able to [take] wickets since that is the only way we can restrict the opposition.”

Pakistan kick off their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
