Sri Lanka Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne was arrested for drink-driving on Sunday morning in Colombo after getting into an accident that put the driver of a three-wheeler in hospital with minor injuries.

Karunaratne was taken into custody at about 5.40am Colombo time in Borella, but has been released on bail.

He is expected to appear in court this week, and it could even be as early as Monday.

Other than the court potentially punishing Karunaratne, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) could also take action against him once the legal proceedings are complete.

The incident comes at a time where the national selectors were contemplating having Karunaratne captain Sri Lanka at the World Cup, after he led the national team to an incredible 2-0 win in the two-match Test series against South Africa in February.

Sri Lanka’s victory was made all the more special as they became only the third team after Australia and England, and the first from Asia, to win a Test series in South Africa.
