Sri Lanka have been dealt a major blow as pace bowler Lahiru Kumara will miss the second Test against Australia and the upcoming series against South Africa due to a hamstring injury.
Kumara hurt his hamstring on the second day of the first Test against Australia in Brisbane, and did not bat on the third day, where Sri Lanka lost by an innings and 40 runs.
“Kumara is out for four to six weeks. So he’s out of the next game,” Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
With Sri Lanka’s first Test against South Africa beginning on February 13 in Durban, Kumara won’t be ready in time.
In addition to Kumara, Nuwan Pradeep has also been ruled out of the second Test against Australia as he sustained a hamstring strain during the warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI.
To make matters worse, pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera is also battling an injury, but neither the nature nor the severity of it has been divulged.
“Dushmantha is also injured. So we’ll need to get another two quick bowlers,” Chandimal said.
The second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia will begin on February 1.
