Former Pakistan left-arm seamer Wasim Akram has made it abundantly clear that Sarfraz Ahmed could continue on as captain.

There have been mounting calls for Sarfraz to be stripped of the captaincy since Pakistan fared poorly in the Asia Cup, and were beaten 2-1 to New Zealand in their Test series in the United Arab Emirates.

Pakistan have also been lost their ongoing Test series against South Africa as they trail 2-0 going into the third and final Test in Johannesburg on January 11.

However, Akram pointed out that there aren’t any other players who have shown strong enough leadership qualities to be considered Sarfraz’s successor.

“Coming back to Sarfraz, this [demand for him to step down] has been the case from the Asia Cup from cricket lovers and the media who are entitled to their opinions,” Akram was quoted as saying by PakPassion. “In my view, if you feel that you have someone who can take over the captaincy from Sarfaraz then tell me his name, if that name is hidden then I wont know about it.

“But [implementing this change just] for the sake of changing the captain is not fair on Sarfraz or the team as well.

“He won you the Champions Trophy a bit more than a year ago so let’s give him a chance in Test cricket, especially in South Africa, where it is difficult. So, let’s give him some breathing space.

“Yes there is stress when captaining a side but then many captains have lead in all three formats without a problem so in my opinion we should stick with Sarfraz.”
