Marcus Stoinis took two wickets and followed that up with a 22-ball 34 as the Melbourne Stars downed the Sydney Thunder by eight wickets.

Opting to bat first, the Thunder lost opener Jos Buttler early on as he was caught by Evan Gulbis at point off the bowling of Scott Boland for 18.

Callum Ferguson was on his way back to the pavilion the very next ball as he was caught by Nick Larkin at backward point off the bowling of Boland for a golden duck.

Thunder captain Shane Watson only made 14 runs before he was caught by Ben Dunk at long-off off the bowling of Adam Zampa.

Jason Sangha and Joe Root fell shortly after before Daniel Sams and Chris Green came to the rescue with a 58-run partnership.

Sams ended up making a 25-ball 42, which included four sixes, before he was caught by Zampa at deep point off the bowling of Stoinis.

With Green going on to make 14, the Thunder finished on 135/8 off their 20 overs.

Boland and Stoinis picked up two wickets apiece, while Zampa, Liam Plunkett and Dwayne Bravo chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 136 to win, the Stars got off to a quick start before Dunk was caught by Root at cover off the bowling of Sams for 13.

Stoinis, who opened the batting with Dunk, made a 22-ball 34 before he was dismissed by Fawad Ahmed.

However, Larkin and captain Glenn Maxwell finished things off with an unbeaten 80-run partnership.

Larkin finished on 41, which came off 41 balls and included a boundary and a six, while Maxwell also remained undefeated on 41, which came off 31 deliveries and included a boundary and two sixes.

Sams and Fawad claimed one wicket each.

Stoinis was named Man of the Match.
