Legendary Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad has insisted that Sarfraz Ahmed should keep hold of the Test captaincy.
Miandad is the latest former Pakistani cricketer to open up about the topic of Sarfraz and his role as captain.
Pakistan were beaten 2-1 in their recent Test series against New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates, which led to calls for Sarfraz to step down from the leadership role and even be removed from the Test side due to his poor run of form with the bat.
However, Miandad pointed out that there are a lack of candidates to replace Sarfraz as captain.
In addition to this, he noted that instead of targeting Sarfraz, some of the other players that underperformed against New Zealand should be in people’s crosshairs and on the selectors’ chopping block.
“My message for Sarfraz is not to worry about this sort of pressure and to continue leading the team with the best of his abilities,” he told PakPassion. “You cannot run a cricket team by looking at statistics alone and in my book, Sarfraz’s name would feature as the first name on any team list I would make as to me, he is our best wicket-keeper who can also score runs when needed.
“Honestly speaking, we have no other option to replace him as Test captain and he should be persisted with and to those looking for scapegoats for the defeat to New Zealand, my advice would be to think of getting rid of some of the under-performing players instead of the captain.”
