England captain Joe Root led by example on the third day in Kandy as he scored a brilliant 124 to give his side a 278-run lead over Sri Lanka.

Starting off the day on 0/0, England lost nighwatchman Jack Leach early on as he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Dilruwan Perera for one run.

Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings made up for the loss of Leach with a 73-run partnership before Jennings was caught by Dhananjaya de Silva at slip off the bowling of Akila Dananjaya for 26.

Burns went on to score 59, which came off 66 balls and included seven boundaries, before he was given out lbw off the bowling of Malinda Pushpakumara.

Ben Stokes fell shortly after for a duck before England regrouped courtesy of a 74-run stand between Root and Jos Buttler.

Buttler ended up making 34 runs before he was clean bowled by Dananjaya, who also took out Moeen Ali for 10 runs.

Root and Ben Foakes steadied things with an 82-run partnership before Root was given out lbw off the bowling of Dananjaya for 124, which came off 146 deliveries and included 10 boundaries and two sixes.

Sam Curran was on his way back to the pavilion the very next ball, while Adil Rashid suffered the same fate as Root.

However, Foakes and James Anderson put together an unbeaten 19-run partnership before the rain came.

As a result of the inclement weather, stumps was called.

Foakes finished on 51, which came off 102 balls and included three boundaries and a six, while Anderson remained undefeated on four off two deliveries, which included a boundary.

Dananjaya was the pick of the bowlers with six wickets, while Dilruwan took two and Pushpakumara claimed one.

England ended day three on 324/9 and will continue batting on Saturday at 09:45 local time or 04:15 GMT.
