South Africa batsman David Miller and captain Faf du Plessis walloped 139 and 125 respectively to lead the Proteas to a 40-run win over Australia in the third ODI in Hobart.

As a result of their victory, South Africa claimed a 2-1 series win.

Opting to bowl first, Australia got the early breakthrough they were looking for as Mitchell Starc had Quinton de Kock caught behind for four runs.

Reeza Hendricks only made eight runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Marcus Stoinis.

Aiden Markram made an encouraging start to his innings before he suffered the same fate as De Kock after scoring 32.

With South Africa in a spot of bother at 55/3, Miller and Du Plessis took over and put the Proteas firmly in the driver’s seat with their 252-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their centuries.

With the tourists cruising, Australia did everything in their power to get a breakthrough. However, they had to wait until the 49th over when Du Plessis was brilliantly caught by Shaun Marsh off the bowling of Stoinis for 125, which came off 114 balls and included 15 boundaries and two sixes.

Miller went on to score a career-best 139, which came off 108 deliveries and included 13 boundaries and four sixes, before he was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood.

Thanks to Miller and Du Plessis, South Africa finished on 320/5.

Starc and Stoinis picked up two wickets apiece, while Hazlewood chipped in with one.

Chasing 321 to win, Dale Steyn started off with a wide before having Chris Lynn caught behind for a golden duck.

Australia captain Aaron Finch only scored 11 runs before he was caught by Kagiso Rabada at mid-on off the bowling of Lungi Ngidi.

Travis Head was the next to go as he was caught by Markram at backward point off the bowling of Rabada for six runs.

Marsh and Stoinis stabilised the innings with a 107-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their fifties, before Stoinis was dismissed by Dwaine Pretorius for 63, which came off 76 balls and included five boundaries and four sixes.

Marsh and Alex Carey kept the runs flowing with an 80-run stand, during which Marsh brought up his hundred, before he was sent packing by Pretorius for a 102-ball 106, which included seven boundaries and four sixes.
