Former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail has backed opening batsman Fakhar Zaman to be the national team’s top performer in the Asia Cup.
Zaman is coming into the tournament, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates, on a high as he was in sublime form during Pakistan’s recent five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Zaman made history during the series as he struck a career-best 210 not out in the fourth ODI.
Zaman joined an elite club following his spectacular knock as he became just the sixth player to score a double century in ODI cricket.
In addition, his knock was the fifth-highest in ODI history and the highest by a Pakistani batsman.
Overall, Zaman scored 515 runs in five ODIs, which included two centuries and two fifties, at an average of 257.50.
With Zaman having stolen the spotlight in Zimbabwe, Sohail is optimistic that he will continue to do so in the Asia Cup, where Pakistan start their campaign against Hong Kong in Dubai on September 16.
“The reason behind Zaman’s success has to be his positive approach. No matter what the situation, he goes out and bats positively,” Sohail was quoted as saying by Sportstar Live.
Sohail also called on Zaman to keep playing aggressive cricket and not to change anything about his approach to the game.
“He (Zaman) doesn’t allow any bulls to fight in his head and knows that going out and playing positive cricket is what’s best for him. That has been the key to his success,” the 51-year-old added.
