Pakistan all-rounder Faheem Ashraf has admitted that fitness is the national team’s top priority and is held in higher regard than players’ performances.
Faheem admitted that the players’ fitness levels are constantly monitored, and added that they are required to keep improving if they want to keep hold of their spots in the team.
“It is compulsory for us to pass the fitness test,” Faheem, who featured in the recently concluded two-Test series against England, was quoted as saying by the Business Recorder. “We also try to surpass ourselves every time while training.
“Now it is the trend in Pakistan cricket that you will only remain in the team if you train hard and are fit, it does not matter what your performance is.”
Faheem also admitted that in order to stay fit and healthy, many of the players are on a strict diet.
“It is very difficult to control one’s diet, but we are playing for Pakistan, so one has take care of their it otherwise you will not be able to maintain the fitness level,” he said. “I have avoided eating [various foods such as] oily dishes and rice.”
