Former India and South Africa head coach Gary Kirsten has admitted that he is simply amazed by the fact that MS Dhoni is “back at his incredible consistent best”.
Kirsten is currently working with the Royal Challengers Bangalore as an assistant coach, while Dhoni is captaining the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhoni is the seventh-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 360 runs in 10 matches at a jaw-dropping average of 90 and a strike-rate of 165.89.
“He just keeps producing and his hunger for performance is amazing,” Kirsten told NDTV. “I don’t think he has reinvented anything, he has just got back at his incredible consistent best.”
With the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales fast approaching, Kirsten believes that there is a possibility Dhoni could help India replicate their 2011 World Cup triumph.
However, he admitted that several other teams also have a good chance of winning the tournament.
“Lots of teams have a chance including India, so it will be an exciting tournament,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kirsten also admitted that India and Royal Challengers captain Virat Kohli will benefit from his upcoming county stint with Surrey.
“Players have to do whatever they can to gain an edge. He is the ultimate professional and I’m sure it will benefit him hugely,” he said.
