India captain Virat Kohli revealed that he opted to take a short break from cricket in order to recover from “a few niggles”.

Kohli starred throughout India’s recent tour of South Africa, where his side achieved history as they secured the country’s first-ever bilateral ODI series win in South Africa.

However, following the long tour in South Africa and a lengthy season at home, Kohli decided to skip the ongoing Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka.

Delving deeper into his decision to miss the T20 tri-series competition, which involves India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Kohli was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying: “Physically, I had a few niggles, I am just getting over those. The workload has started to disagree with me a little bit.

“I have to be very careful about how I go forward with my body, my mind, my cricket. Times like these are very, very important. I am totally enjoying it; I do not even have an inch of me missing out on anything because my body really needed this.”

Kohli was not the only high-profile Indian player to be rested for the tournament as MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav were also given a break.

However, having had the opportunity to get some much-needed rest and relaxation, Kohli will be back on the cricket field next month as he will captain the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which gets underway on April 7.

While the Royal Challengers won’t play on the opening day of the tournament, they will kick off their campaign the day after as they will go up against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
