India captain Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni will be rested for the upcoming Nidahas Trophy, which will be held in Sri Lanka next month.
Pace bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, spinner Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have also been rested for the T20 tri-series, which will see India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh go up against each other.
Given that India are coming off a long tour of South Africa, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad pointed out that many of the senior players in the side are in need of some time off.
“We’ve kept in mind the workload and upcoming schedule while finalising the team for Nidahas Trophy,” Prasad was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “The high-performance team has suggested that adequate rest should be given to our fast bowlers to help improve athletic performance, maximise rest and prevent injury. MS Dhoni was not available for selection as he had requested for rest.”
With Kohli to miss the tournament, Rohit Sharma will lead in his absence, while his opening partner, Shikhar Dhawan, has been named vice-captain.
Spinner Washington Sundar, pace bowler Mohammed Siraj, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and the uncapped duo of Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar are among the player India have drafted into their squad for the tournament.
The Nidahas Trophy will begin on March 6, with the first match being between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.
