South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been ruled out for the rest of the ODI series and upcoming Twenty20 series against India due to a finger injury.

Du Plessis fractured his right index finger during the first ODI in Durban, which India won by six wickets, and will now need three to six weeks to make a full recovery.

The 33-year-old will undergo rehabilitation and look to make his comeback at the start of the four-Test series against Australia, which begins on March 1.

The national selectors have called up batsman Farhaan Behardien as Du Plessis’ replacement. A stand-in captain will also be named on Saturday.

Du Plessis, who made a brilliant 120 in the first ODI, is the second high-profile player South Africa have lost as batsman AB de Villiers was sidelined for the first three games of the six-match series due to a right index finger injury of his own.

South Africa will be looking to level the series when they clash with India in the second ODI in Centurion on Sunday.
