South Africa have been dealt a major blow ahead of their six-match ODI series against India as batsman AB de Villiers will miss the first three games due to a finger injury.

De Villiers injured his right index finger during the third Test against India in Johannesburg and will need approximately two weeks to make a full recovery.

According to a Cricket South Africa statement, De Villiers will be reassessed prior to the fourth match, which will be the pink ODI, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on February 10.

Despite De Villiers being a vital part of South Africa’s squad, the national selectors have opted not to name a replacement.

The ODI series between South Africa and India gets underway on February 1 in Durban.
