Australia have added all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to the ODI squad as a potential replacement for opening batsman Aaron Finch, who has been ruled out of the fourth ODI against England in Adelaide with a minor hamstring injury.
Even though Maxwell is unlikely to feature in the match, he will still fly to Adelaide tonight ahead of fourth ODI, which will be held on Australia Day.
Finch’s injury will likely lead to Travis Head returning to the playing XI after he was dropped for the third ODI in Sydney.
While Finch will be reassessed ahead of the fifth ODI in Perth on January 28, it is understood that Maxwell will be available for the Melbourne Stars’ final Big Bash League (BBL) game against the Hobart Hurricanes on January 27.
Maxwell had initially been dropped from the ODI squad in favour of big-hitting batsman Chris Lynn. However, when Lynn was ruled out of the series with a calf injury, many thought that Maxwell would be the frontrunner to replace him.
But, the Australian selectors threw a curveball no one saw coming as they opted to select Cameron White, who has made scores of 15 not out and 17 in the two ODIs he has played.
Even if Maxwell doesn’t feature in the ODI series against England, he has been included in Australia’s squad for the T20 tri-series, which also involves England and New Zealand.
The T20 tri-series gets underway on February 3, with Australia going up against New Zealand in Sydney.
