Chris Lynn could be out of action for three weeks

Australia and Brisbane Heat batsman Chris Lynn will miss the upcoming ODI series against England and could be sidelined for the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) due to a calf injury.

Lynn sustained the injury during the Heat’s victory over the Perth Scorchers and will need at least three weeks to recover.

Lynn underwent scans on his calf on Saturday and has been ruled out of the Heat’s next game against the Hobart Hurricanes on Wednesday.

“When we met on the weekend, it was apparent a scan was needed and that showed an injury to his left calf,” Heat physiotherapist Martin Love said via a statement released by the franchise. “We have reviewed that today with Cricket Australia and have determined a course of action in terms of rehabilitation and return to playing.”

Lynn admitted that he was gutted with the news about his injury, but is determined to return as soon as possible.

“It is annoying and I’m very disappointed to miss an opportunity with the ODI side, but I know it is minor in the scheme of things,” he said. “I have been working very hard to get myself right, and the positive thing is that my shoulder is feeling very good.

“I’ll do the work again and I am confident I will give myself a shot at playing some good cricket again soon.”

According to cricket.com.au, a Cricket Australia spokesperson told News Corp that the national selectors will wait to see the results of the scan before deciding whether to call up a replacement for Lynn for the ODI series.

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, who opens the batting with Lynn for the Heat, said that Australia shouldn’t have selected the 27-year-old for the ODI series against England as he is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Lynn has not only been placed in areas where he won’t have to field much, but he is also underarming the ball or throwing it with his left hand.

McCullum feels that Australia should have picked Lynn for next month’s T20 tri-series involving England and New Zealand instead.

“Personally, I would have liked to have seen him being kept until the T20s,” McCullum, who opens the batting with Lynn for the Heat, told Channel Ten as quoted by cricket.com.au. “Then they can introduce him and get him back into the fold.

“But you’d never turn the opportunity to play for his country and I know ‘Lynny’ was very excited about it.”

With Lynn out of the ODI series against England, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is likely to replace him. Ironically, Lynn’s inclusion in the squad came at the expense of Maxwell.

On Sunday, Maxwell admitted that he was “extremely disappointed” to be dropped, but that he understood the reasoning behind it.

“I was extremely disappointed not to be in that one day side, but I completely understood the reasoning from Trevor Hohns that my last 20 ODIs haven’t been good enough,” Maxwell told cricket.com.au. “That was the phone call I received. You can’t really say too much to that.”

He went on to say: “I feel like I’ve been in good form this summer and I was hoping that would get me the nod. They (selectors) asked me to go away and make runs and I tried to pile them on. I tried to change certain things and change certain perceptions.

“I felt like I went a long way to doing that by being the leading run scorer (in the Shield) heading into Christmas. Even at the start of this Big Bash, I’ve played a lot more sensible, I’ve tried to be the rock for our team. I feel like I’ve made big strides this summer, both technique-wise and mentally.”
