Shoaib Akhtar has urged India and Pakistan to resume bilateral ties and put their political differences aside.

The legendary Pakistan pace bowler pointed out that the current generation are being denied the opportunity to experience the long-standing rivalry between the two countries.

The BCCI and PCB signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2014 that would see the two nations play six bilateral series between 2015 to 2023.

However, with India not honouring the MoU, they only play Pakistan in major tournaments like the World Cup or World Twenty20.

“It is terribly sad that cricketers from either side of the border are not often getting to experience the Indo-Pak rivalry,” Akhtar was quoted as saying by DNA India. “Along with the Ashes, it is the biggest series in the game.

“The cricketers are not getting a chance to become overnight heroes for their respective countries. Pakistan cricketers are adored in India, I myself have got so much love from India.

“I really wanted the current Pakistani crop to experience the same kind of love we received in India back in the day and showcase their talent.

“Indo-Pak cricket should happen but if it is not happening, one should move on and avoid making statements.”

When asked if bilateral series between India and Pakistan will resume, Akhtar noted that relations between the two countries will have to be smoothed out first.

India and Pakistan have not played a full bilateral series since the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. However, Pakistan did tour India for a short limited overs series, which consisted of two Twenty20 Internationals and three ODIs, in December 2012 to January 2013.

“I feel bilateral series won’t happen until bilateral talks resume between the two countries,” Akhtar said. “And in the current scenario, one doesn’t know if cricket diplomacy will work or not.

“It is a bit strange and sad that it will be decided at the diplomatic level when it is often said the sports should be left aside from politics.”

The 42-year-old added that he doesn’t blame the BCCI or PCB for the stalemate.

“Having said that, it is not anyone’s fault (the BCCI or PCB),” he said. “Both boards want the series to take place. It is in their interest if the series happens.”
