Hobart Hurricanes opener D’Arcy Short continued his sublime run of form as he smashed a superb 59 and took a wicket to lead his side to a six-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat.

Thanks to Short, who broke the record for the most runs scored in a Big Bash League season, the Hurricanes moved up to third on the standings, while the Heat are in fifth place.

Choosing to bat first, the Heat lost opener Sam Heazlett on the fourth ball of the match as he was caught behind off the bowling of Clive Rose for five runs.

Captain Brendon McCullum and Joe Burns made up for the loss of Heazlett with a 59-run partnership before Burns was dismissed by Short for 38.

Alex Ross only made four, while McCullum went on to score 51 off 38 balls, which included five boundaries and a six, before he was caught by Hurricanes skipper George Bailey at extra cover off the bowling of Tymal Mills.

Even though the Heat continued to lose wickets in a hurry, they ended up finishing on 165/8 thanks to Ben Cutting’s 26-ball 30 and a quickfire 16 from wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson.

Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Rose, Short, Mills, Cameron Boyce and Dan Christian chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 166 to win, the Hurricanes were dealt a big blow on the fifth ball of their innings as opener Alex Doolan was sent packing by Burns for 10.

Short and Bailey stabilised the innings with a 73-run partnership before Bailey was caught by Cameron Gannon at long-on off the bowling of Cutting for 19.

Christian thumped a nine-ball 23, while Short went on to make 59 off 49 balls, which included eight boundaries, before he was caught by Burns at short third man off the bowling of Mark Steketee.

Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade finished things off with an unbeaten 41-run stand as the Hurricanes reached their target with 10 balls to spare.

McDermott finished on 32 off 19 balls, which included three boundaries and a six, while Wade remained undefeated on 11 off nine deliveries, which included a solitary boundary.

Burns, Steketee, Cutting and Brendan Doggett claimed one wicket each.

Christian was named Man of the Match.
