Brendan Doggett took an exceptional five-wicket haul to not only lead the Brisbane Heat to a 49-run win over the Perth Scorchers, but also to the top of the Big Bash League (BBL) standings.

Furthermore, the Scorchers were dealt their first loss of the current BBL season as prior to this game, they were unbeaten with four wins to their name.

Being put in to bat first, the Heat got off to a great start as Chris Lynn and captain Brendon McCullum amassed a 59-run partnership in under six overs before Lynn was caught by Michael Klinger at mid-on off the bowling of David Willey for a 20-ball 39.

Sean Heazlett only made 11 before falling to Ashton Agar, while McCullum went on to make 32 before he was caught by Scorchers skipper Adam Voges at extra cover off the bowling of Joel Paris.

Alex Ross failed to have an impact with the bat, but Joe Burns and Ben Cutting stabilised the innings with a 62-run partnership before Burns was given out lbw off the bowling of Andrew Tye for 35.

Cutting ended up scoring 46 off 20 deliveries, which included a boundary and five sixes, as the Heat finished on 191/6 off their 20 overs.

Willey was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Agar, Tye, Paris and Jhye Richardson chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 192 to win, the Scorchers lost opener Michael Klinger early on as he was dismissed by Mark Steketee for 15.

Hilton Cartwright was trudging back to the pavilion the very next ball as he was caught by Burns at slip.

Willey managed to make 25, but once he was gone, Doggett sliced through the Scorchers’ middle and lower order with relative ease.

Agar tried to keep his side in contention, but his 18-ball 31 was not enough to get the job done as the Scorchers were bowled out for 142.

Doggett was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Steketee took three, and Yasir Shah and Mitchell Swepson claimed one wicket each.

Cutting was named Man of the Match.
