Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman has been stripped of his central contract, fined Tk 20 lakh and banned from playing domestic cricket for six months after he assaulted a fan on December 21.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan confirmed the repercussions following a disciplinary committee hearing on Monday.

Sabbir, who was earning $30,000 through his Grade B contract, not only assaulted the fan during a National Cricket League match between Rajshahi Division and Dhaka Metropolis, but also acted in an “aggressive” manner when summoned by the match referee.

Even though Sabbir apologised during Monday’s hearing, Sheikh Sohel, vice-chairman of the BCB’s disciplinary committee, said a harsh punishment was handed down since the 26-year-old has a history of bad behaviour.

“We felt that he didn’t learn anything from his past two punishments,” Sohel said. “We have meted out a heavy punishment. He is out of the national contract, which is a huge blow. He is also fined Tk 20 lakh. But this is his last chance. If he has another brush with indiscipline, he will be permanently suspended.”
