Dwayne Bravo took a majestic five-wicket haul and Cameron White struck an unbeaten 79 as the Melbourne Renegades started their Big Bash League (BBL) campaign with a seven-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes.

Being put in to bat first, the Hurricanes got off to a great start as openers Alex Doolan and D’Arcy Short amassed a 56-run partnership before Doolan was dismissed by Bravo for 26.

Short went on to make a 19-ball 34 before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of veteran spinner Brad Hogg.

Ben McDermott and captain George Bailey stabilised the innings with a 52-run stand before McDermott, who made 34, became Bravo’s second victim.

Once McDermott was gone, the Hurricanes began to lose wickets in a hurry, largely thanks to Bravo, who took three wickets in the final over of the innings.

With regular dismissals pegging them back, the Hurricanes finished on 164/8 off their 20 overs.

Bravo was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Hogg, Kane Richardson and Mohammad Nabi chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 165 to win, the Renegades were dealt a major blow on the second ball of the innings as skipper Aaron Finch was caught behind off the bowling of Clive Rose for four runs.

White and Marcus Harris made up for the early loss of Finch with a 113-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their fifties.

However, after reaching the half-century mark, Harris was sent packing by Jofra Archer for 50 off 34 balls, which included six boundaries and a six.

Archer struck again four balls later as he had Tom Cooper caught behind for a duck.

Despite losing two quick wickets, the Renegades went on to win the match with nine balls to spare courtesy of White and Brad Hodge’s unbeaten 48-run partnership.

White finished on 79 off 59 balls, which included eight boundaries and two sixes, while Hodge remained undefeated on 22 off 14 deliveries, which included a boundary and two sixes.

Archer was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Rose claimed one.

Bravo was named Man of the Match.
