England seamer James Anderson confirmed that Ben Duckett poured a drink over his head at a bar in Perth last Thursday, but played down the severity of the incident.

As a result of Duckett’s action, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) fined him the maximum amount for an England Lions player, suspended him for the remainder of their tour of Australia and issued him a written warning about his conduct.

The incident involving Duckett and Anderson comes after Ben Stokes was withdrawn from the Ashes squad for his alleged involvement in a street fight outside a nightclub in Bristol in September.

Furthermore, during the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, it was revealed that England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow headbutted Australia opener Cameron Bancroft. However, both Bairstow and Bancroft brushed aside the incident and made it clear that there was nothing malicious about it.

Opening up on Duckett pouring a drink over his head, Anderson wrote in his column for The Telegraph that his side have to be smarter, especially as they have been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as of late.

“The incident with Ben Duckett was not malicious and was a bit of a non-event but we understand that in this climate we have to be smarter in the future,” Anderson wrote. “The frustrating thing is that what was a pretty silly incident would have gone unnoticed before but now puts an unfair question mark over our culture.

“We have been working really hard and every now and then on a tour like this you need a release.”

Anderson also admitted that Australia are likely to use the incident against England during the third Ashes Test in Perth.

“I know Australia will use the Duckett incident as a way of goading us, or taking the mickey,” he wrote. “Fine. It will probably be funnier than what they have spouted at me so far in this series. They jump on anything to have a go at you so I am expecting a bit of lip. I have no problem with that.”
