India captain Virat Kohli and opener Murali Vijay scored 156 not out and 155 respectively to put their side in a commanding position over Sri Lanka on the opening day of the third Test in Delhi.

Choosing to bat first, India got off to a solid start as openers Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan amassed a 42-run partnership before Dhawan was dismissed by Dilruwan Perera for 23.

Cheteshwar Pujara also made 23 runs before he was sent packing by Lahiru Gamage.

However, Vijay and Kohli stabilised the innings with a 283-run partnership, during which both batsmen cruised past their hundreds and put India firmly in the driver’s seat.

With both batsmen keeping the runs flowing at a healthy rate, Sri Lanka tried everything in their power to end the stand, but they kept coming up empty over and over again.

However, after more than 65 overs, they were finally rewarded when Vijay was stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off the bowling of Lakshan Sandakan for 155, which came off 267 balls and included 13 boundaries.

Sandakan struck again in his next over as he got Rahane out the same way as Vijay.

Kohli and Rohit Sharma ensured India didn’t lose anymore wicket as they put together an unbeaten six-run partnership before stumps was called.

Kohli finished on 156 off 186 balls, which included 16 boundaries, while Rohit remained undefeated on six off 14 deliveries, which included a solitary boundary.

Sandakan was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Dilruwan and Gamage claimed one wicket each.

India ended day one on 371/4 and will continue batting on Sunday at 09:30 local time or 04:00 GMT.
