Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood removed Alastair Cook and James Vince in quick succession after captain Steve Smith tormented England and gave his side a slender lead with an unbeaten 141.
Starting off the day on 165/4, Australia only added 10 runs to their overnight score before Shaun Marsh was caught by James Anderson off the bowling of Stuart Broad for 51, which came off 141 balls and included eight boundaries.
Wicketkeeper Tim Paine fell shortly after as he was caught behind off the bowling of Anderson for 13.
Even though Mitchell Starc only made six runs, Smith and Pat Cummins stabilised the innings with a 66-run partnership, during which Smith brought up his 21st Test century.

However, with Cummins nearing his maiden Test fifty, disaster struck as he was caught by Alastair Cook off the bowling of Chris Woakes for a career-best 42.
Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon scored six and nine runs respectively before Australia were bowled out for 328, which gave them a 26-run lead.
Smith was left stranded on 141, which came off 326 balls and included 14 boundaries.
Broad was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Anderson and Moeen Ali took two wickets apiece. As for Woakes, Jake Ball and England captain Joe Root, they chipped in with one wicket each.
Trailing by 326 runs, England made an awful start to their second innings as Cook was caught by Starc at long leg off the bowling of Hazlewood for seven runs.

Despite doing everything possible to get a third wicket, it was not to be for Australia as Mark Stoneman and Root put together an unbeaten 16-run partnership before stumps was called.
Stoneman finished on 19 off 49 balls, which included three boundaries, while Root remained undefeated on five as England claimed a slim seven-run lead.
Hazlewood was the only bowler to take any wickets.
England ended day three on 33/2 and will continue batting on Sunday at 10:00 local time or 00:00 GMT.
