Faf du Plessis will officially lead South Africa in all three formats after he was handed the ODI captaincy.

Du Plessis will succeed AB de Villiers, who stepped down from the leadership role last month.

At that point, there was a lot of speculation about De Villiers’ future, especially in regards to longest format as he opted to take a break from Test cricket for the majority of 2017. But, the 33-year-old has confirmed that he will continue representing the Proteas in Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals.

Du Plessis is now likely to keep hold of the ODI captaincy at least until after the 2019 World Cup, but his first assignment will be the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh on home soil next month.

“Congratulations to Faf on his appointment as the natural successor to the ODI leadership,” Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement. “He has established himself as one of the best leaders in world cricket and this was reflected in his appointment as the captain for the World XI currently engaged in the T20 Series against Pakistan.”
