CPL 2017 24th Match: McCullum powers Knight Riders to convincing win over Tallawahs

Brendon McCullum clubbed a sensational 91 as the Trinbago Knight Riders crushed the Jamaica Tallawahs by 36 runs at Sabina Park.

The Knight Riders’ victory keeps them at the summit of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) points table, while the Tallawahs missed their opportunity to surpass the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots into second place.

Coming into the match, the Knight Riders had downed the Patriots in a match affected by a power outage and rain, while the Tallawahs had defeated the St Lucia Stars.

Being put in to bat first, the Knight Riders got off to the worst possible start as opener Sunil Narine was dismissed by Krishmar Santokie on the first ball of the match.

McCullum and Colin Munro made up for the loss of Narine with a 92-run partnership before Munro was caught by Lendl Simmons off the bowling of Rovman Powell for a 24-ball 42.

McCullum and Darren Bravo kept the runs flowing with a 63-run stand, during which McCullum surpassed his fifty, before Bravo, who made 28, became Powell’s second victim.

Robbie Frylinck fell shortly after, while McCullum went on to make 91 off 62 balls, which included five boundaries and six sixes.

Even though captain Dwayne Bravo was removed for four runs, the Knight Riders finished on 208/6 off their 20 overs.

Santokie and Powell picked up two wickets apiece, while Kesrick Williams and Odean Smith chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 209 to win, the Tallawahs lost opener Glenn Phillips on the second ball of the innings as he was stumped by Denesh Ramdin off the bowling of Nikita Miller for a duck.

Tallawahs skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Simmons stabilised the innings with a 85-run partnership, during which Sangakkara brought up his fifty.

However, he was unable to push on as he was clean bowled by Frylinck for 53 off 36 balls, which included six boundaries and two sixes.

Sangakkara was dismissed on the final ball of the ninth over, but on the first ball of the 10th over, things went from bad to worse for the Tallawahs as Simmons was caught behind off the bowling of Javon Scantlebury-Searles for 32.

Andre McCarthy provided a small spark during his quickfire knock of 21 before he was sent packing by Bravo.

The Tallawahs’ downward spiral continued when Scantlebury-Searles took out Mahmudullah and Powell in successive deliveries for six and 31 respectively.

In the end, the Tallawahs fell well short of their target as they finished on 172/7.

Scantlebury-Searles was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Miller, Bravo, Frylinck and Ronsford Beaton claimed one wicket each.
