Jamaica Tallawahs captain Kumar Sangakkara led by example as he thumped a game-winning 74 not out to lead his side to a comfortable six-wicket win over the St Lucia Stars.
With their victory, the Tallawahs continue to sit in third place on the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) standings, while the Stars remain at the foot of the table as they have lost eight of their nine games, with the other one being washed out.
Choosing to bowl first, the Tallawahs got an early breakthrough as Krishmar Santokie dismissed Stars opener Rahkeem Cornwall for seven runs.
Cornwall’s opening partner, Andre Fletcher, scored 20 before he was caught by Andre McCarthy at deep midwicket off the bowling of Garey Mathurin.
Marlon Samuels fell shortly after for four runs, but captain Shane Watson and Johnson Charles helped the Stars recover via a 41-run partnership.
Even though Charles became Mathurin’s second victim, Watson began to up the ante and took the attack to the Tallawahs during his 43-run stand with Darren Sammy.
Sammy was run out by Glenn Phillips for 13, while Watson went on to score 80 off 45 balls, which included three boundaries and seven sixes, before he was caught by Rovman Powell at long-on off the bowling of Mohammad Sami.
With Kyle Mayers striking a quickfire 13, the Stars finished on 172/8 off their 20 overs.
Santokie and Mathurin picked up two wickets apiece, while Sami, Powell and Kesrick Williams chipped in with one wicket each.
Chasing 173 to win, the Tallawahs made a brisk start to their innings before Lendl Simmons was given out lbw off the bowling of Jerome Taylor for 11.
Phillips and captain Kumar Sangakkara made up for the loss of Simmons with a 42-run partnership before Phillips was clean bowled by Cornwall for 21.
Sangakkara and McCarthy kept the runs flowing with a 71-run partnership before McCarthy was caught by Samuels at cover off the bowling of Watson for 36.
Powell only made nine runs before attempting to hit a delivery so hard that his bat flew out of his hands and landed on his stumps.
Despite Powell’s embarrassing dismissal, the Tallawahs went on to win the match with an over to spare.
Sangakkara finished on 74 off 45 balls, which included nine boundaries and three sixes.
