Legendary West Indies pace bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose has revealed that he would “certainly take” the England bowling coach job if he were to be offered the role.

Ambrose’s comments come after current England bowling coach Ottis Gibson is set to leave his post in order to replace Russell Domingo as South Africa’s head coach.

Gibson is set to vacate the position after England’s ongoing three-Test series against the West Indies.

Ambrose previously served as the West Indies’ bowling coach, but was sacked after their World Twenty20 triumph in India last year.

Given that Gibson is highly likely to leave the England coaching set-up, Ambrose believes that he could be the perfect replacement as England will be searching for a new bowling coach in the lead-up to the highly-anticipated Ashes series in Australia later this year.

“If an opportunity came from England I would certainly take it because I think I have something to offer,” Ambrose told Sportsmail. “I would be very interested in returning to international cricket.”

Ambrose admitted that he was shocked when then-West Indies head coach Phil Simmons told him that he would be replaced as bowling coach by Roddy Estwick, who only played 37 first-class matches and 42 List A games during his career.

Ambrose, meanwhile, represented the West Indies in 98 Tests and 176 ODIs, and took 405 and 225 wickets respectively.

“It was strange really because Phil Simmons never indicated that I wasn’t doing a good job,” the 53-year-old said. “He rang me and said he wanted someone more technical but he’d never told me that I wasn’t technical enough. What that means I don’t know.”

Ex-England seamer Darren Gough will observe the Test team’s practice session at Headingley on Thursday, but he is not considered to be in the picture for the bowling coach job if Gibson leaves.

England hold a 1-0 lead going into the second Test, which begins on Friday.
