Ambati Rayudu and Saurabh Tiwary smashed 63 and 52 respectively as the Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by nine runs.

Choosing to bowl first, the Knight Riders got an early breakthrough as Trent Boult dismissed Lendl Simmons for a duck.

Tiwary and captain Rohit Sharma made up for the loss of Simmons with a 57-run partnership before Rohit was given out lbw off the bowling of Ankit Rajpoot for 27.

Tiwary and Rayudu kept the runs flowing with a 61-run partnership, during which Tiwary brought up his half-century.

However, he was unable to make the most of it as he was run out by Umesh Yadav for 52, which came off 43 balls and included nine boundaries.

Rayudu proceeded to make 63 off 37 deliveries, which included six boundaries and three sixes, before he was stumped by Robin Uthappa off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav.

Thanks to Rayudu and Tiwary’s knocks, the Indians finished on 173/5 off their 20 overs.

Boult was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Kuldeep and Rajpoot chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 174 to win, the Knight Riders were dealt a huge blow on the fourth ball of their innings as opener Sunil Narine was dismissed by Tim Southee for a duck.

Just as the Knight Riders were beginning to recover, captain Gautam Gambhir was sent packing by Mitchell Johnson for 21.

With Uthappa, Chris Lynn and Yusuf Pathan falling in quick succession, the Knight Riders found themselves in a spot of bother at 87/5.

Colin de Grandhomme tried to rescue his side, but he could only muster 29 runs before being clean bowled by Hardik Pandya.

Once Manish Pandey fell for 33 shortly after, it was all over for the Knight Riders as they ended up falling short of their target.

Southee, Pandya and Vinay Kumar took two wickets apiece, while Johnson and Karn Sharma claimed one wicket each.

Rayudu was named Man of the Match.
