The Kings XI Punjab are still in contention for a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs after they overcame Chris Lynn’s spectacular knock of 84 and beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by 14 runs.

Being put in to bat first, the Kings XI got off to a brisk start before opening batsman Manan Vohra was caught behind off the bowling of Umesh Yadav for 25.

Martin Guptill fell shortly after for 12 runs, while Shaun Marsh could only muster 11 runs before he was clean bowled by Chris Woakes.

Captain Glenn Maxwell and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha stabilised the innings with a 71-run partnership before Maxwell was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for a 25-ball 44.

Saha went on to make 38 before he was stumped by Robin Uthappa off the bowling of Kuldeep.

Thanks to a quickfire 15 from Rahul Tewatia, the Kings XI finished on 167/6 off their 20 overs.

Woakes and Kuldeep picked up two wickets apiece, while Umesh and Sunil Narine chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 168 to win, the Knight Riders made a blistering start to their innings until Narine was clean bowled by Mohit Sharma for 18.

Captain Gautam Gambhir and Uthappa fell in the space of three balls as they were both sent packing by Tewatia.

Lynn and Manish Pandey steadied the innings with a 52-run stand before Pandey was removed by Matt Henry for 18.

Lynn was run out by Axar Patel the very next ball for 84, which came off 52 balls and included eight boundaries and three sixes.
