IPL 2017 47th Match: Amla’s hundred goes in vain as Smith dents Kings XI’s playoff hopes

Despite a sparkling 104 from opening batsman Hashim Amla, the Kings XI Punjab suffered a six-wicket loss at the hands of the Gujarat Lions.

Led by opener Dwayne Smith’s 74, the Lions earned a consolation win, but also left the Kings XI in a spot of bother in regards to the race to the playoffs.

Choosing to bowl first, the Lions got their first wicket on the fifth ball of the match as Pradeep Sangwan removed Martin Guptill for two runs.

Amla and Shaun Marsh made up for the loss of Guptill with a 125-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their half-centuries, before Marsh was dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni for 58 off 43 balls, which included six boundaries.

Amla and captain Glenn Maxwell kept the runs flowing with a 60-run stand, during which Amla brought up his hundred, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Basil Thampi for 104, which came off 60 deliveries and included eight boundaries and five sixes.

Maxwell went on to make an unbeaten 20 as the Kings XI finished on 189/3 off their 20 overs.

Sangwan, Kulkarni and Thampi picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 190 to win, the Lions got off to a flyer courtesy of Smith as he and Ishan Kishan put together a 91-run partnership.

Kishan ended up being dismissed for 29, while Smith smashed 74 off 39 balls, which included eight boundaries and four sixes, before he was sent packing by Maxwell.

Despite the loss of Kishan and Smith, Lions skipper Suresh Raina and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik struck 39 and 35 not out respectively to lead their side to a victory with two balls to spare.

Sandeep Sharma was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Maxwell and Thangarasu Natarajan claimed one wicket each.

Smith was named Man of the Match.
