Robin Uthappa smashed a magnificent 87 to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders to a comfortable seven-wicket win over the Rising Pune Supergiants.

Uthappa’s brilliant innings also saw the Knight Riders reclaim the top spot on the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings.

Being put in to bat first, the Supergiants got off to a great start as Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi amassed a 65-run partnership before Tripathi was clean bowled by Piyush Chawla for 38.

Rahane went on to make 46 off 41 balls, which included four boundaries and a six, before he was stumped by Uthappa off the bowling of Sunil Narine.

The Supergiants began to lose wickets at regular intervals after Rahane’s departure, but captain Steve Smith helped his side finish on 182/5 thanks to his unbeaten 51, which came off 37 balls and included four boundaries and a six.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Narine, Chawla and Umesh Yadav chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 183 to win, the Knight Riders lost Narine in the third over as he was run out by Shardul Thakur for 16 runs.

Uthappa and captain Gautam Gambhir stabilised the innings and almost single-handedly ended the game as they put together a 158-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their half-centuries.

With the Knight Riders on the brink of victory, Uthappa was removed by Jaydev Unadkat for 87 off 47 balls, which included seven boundaries and six sixes.

Gambhir fell shortly after for 62, which came off 46 deliveries and included six boundaries and a six.
