Shane Watson will take over as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore on an interim basis since Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are currently sidelined with injuries.
Kohli is nursing a shoulder problem, which he sustained on the first day of the third Test in Ranchi, while De Villiers has been ruled out of the team’s opener against the Hyderabad Sunrisers on Wednesday due to a back injury.
Royal Challengers head coach Daniel Vettori had initially said that De Villiers would captain the side since Kohli is not healthy, but with the South Africa ODI skipper still recovering, Watson has been handed the reins.
“He still has some minor discomfort and we felt that couple of days off would be best before we have him back in action,” Vettori said of De Villiers. “We hope to see him on the field in good form by 8th April match against Delhi Daredevils.”
To make things even worse for the Royal Challengers, Sarfaraz Khan is likely to miss the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) after he sustained a leg injury while training on Monday and had to be stretchered off the field.
