Fawad Ahmed ripped through the Sydney Sixers’ batting line-up with four wickets to lead the Sydney Thunder to an eight-wicket win in the highly-anticipated derby.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques would have been regretting his decision to bat first as as they were in trouble right from the get-go.

After losing opener Daniel Hughes for an encouraging 20, the Sixers completely imploded courtesy of Fawad as they went from 36/2 to being reduced to 88/9.

In the end, they only managed to post a score of 99/9 off their 20 overs as only four of their batsmen – Hughes, Michael Lumb, Henriques and Ben Dwarshuis – reached double figures.

Fawad was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Carlos Brathwaite snapped up three and Chris Green and captain Shane Watson chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 100 to win, the Thunder made a great start to their innings as Kurtis Patterson and James Vince amassed a 54-run partnership before Vince was dismissed by Sean Abbott for 28.

Abbott struck again just five balls later as he removed Watson for four, but that was to be the last taste of success the Sixers had as Patterson and Ben Rohrer mopped up the remaining runs to lead their side to victory with 10 overs to spare.

Abbott was the only bowler to take any wickets.

Fawad was named Man of the Match.
