“I don’t think that will ever happen”

Mitchell Johnson has revealed that he has no plans to come out of retirement and represent Australia in Twenty20 Internationals.

Johnson’s comments come after spinner Nathan Lyon suggested that he would consider returning to international cricket should the selectors want him to feature in the three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka next month.

Australia will not have many of their regular players, such as David Warner, captain Steve Smith and left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc, for that series as they will be with the Test team in India for a four-Test series that begins just a day after the final Twenty20 International on February 22.

While Johnson’s experience and raw pace would be useful, the 35-year-old, who retired from international cricket in November 2015, insisted that he is more than content just featuring in domestic competitions like the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), in which he is representing the Perth Scorchers.

“Look, I don’t think so. I don’t think that will ever happen,” he said. “The ears prick up a little bit. But I’m happy playing this sort of format (domestically). It’s a lot more relaxed.

“I feel like there’s a bit more of that fun playing the Big Bash. When you go to that next level, there’s definitely something different. You really have to step up.

“I’m probably not up to that standard. There’s other guys there that are playing much better – AJ Tye for instance. He’s playing much-better cricket than I am.”
