“From what I’ve heard, Shaun Marsh is a good chance to play”

Former Australia opener Chris Rogers feels that Shaun Marsh will be in the running to be selected for the four-Test tour of India in February.

Marsh, who opened the batting for Australia with David Warner, has been out of the Australian Test squad since breaking his finger in the home series against South Africa in November.

In that time, Matt Renshaw has made his presence felt, especially in the ongoing third Test against Pakistan in Sydney, where he made a career-best 184.

However, Rogers believes that Renshaw has still not fully cemented his place as Australia’s opening batsman and pointed out that Marsh could take his place in India as he is an excellent player when it comes to spin bowling.

“I don’t necessarily think he has (secured his place),” Rogers said. “I don’t see it exactly that way. From what I’ve heard, Shaun Marsh is a good chance to play. For who? I don’t know. It would be very difficult to drop him but playing spin in India is a lot different to playing in Australia.

“He is booked in for the opener’s (spot) for a long time to come for Australia. Whether that’s in the Indian series, I don’t know.”

But, even if Marsh replaces Renshaw for the tour of India, Rogers conceded that the 20-year-old has a bright future ahead of him.

“Even if he missed out there I expect them to take him and him to learn a lot,” Rogers added.
