The Melbourne Stars imploded in their rain-affected showdown with crosstown rivals, the Melbourne Renegades, and paid the price for it as they lost by seven runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Being put in to bat first, the Renegades got off to a blistering start, but that was halted when Kevin Pietersen took a brilliant catch off the bowling of Scott Boland to remove Sunil Narine for 21.

Marcus Harris only made nine runs before he was stumped off the bowling of Adam Zampa, while skipper Aaron Finch was clean bowled by James Faulkner for 30.

With the Renegades having lost three wickets in quick time, Cameron White and Tom Cooper came to the rescue with a 72-run partnership before Cooper was dismissed by Marcus Stoinis for 36.

White went on to make an unbeaten 64, which came off 43 balls and included four boundaries and two sixes, as the Renegades finished on 171/4 off their 20 overs.

Boland, Zampa, Faulkner and Stoinis picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 172 to win, the Stars made a dismal start to their innings as Glenn Maxwell was clean bowled by Cooper for one run on the fourth ball of the innings.

Kevin Pietersen made 15 before spooning a catch to Finch at mid-off. Shortly after, there was a slight rain delay and the match was reduced to 18 overs with the Stars needing 159 to win.

However, not long after play resumed, Stars captain David Hussey was clean bowled by Brad Hogg after scoring 20.

Despite the loss of Hussey, Luke Wright and Faulkner steered the innings back in the right direction with a 57-run stand before Faulkner was sent packing by Chris Tremain for 25.

Wright went on to make 45 before he was cleaned up by Hogg, and once he was gone, the Stars began to struggle as they lost a flurry of wickets, three of which came via run out in the 17th over.

The Stars were unable to recover from their shocking collapse and as a result, they saw their perfect record go up in smoke.

Hogg was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Cooper, Tremain and Cameron Stevenson claimed one wicket each.
