India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin scored 58 and took two wickets to keep his side in command against England on the second day of the second Test in Visakhapatnam.
Starting off the day on 317/4, India were dealt a huge blow early on as captain Virat Kohli was dismissed by Moeen Ali for 167, which came off 267 balls and included 18 boundaries.
Moeen went on to take out wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha shortly after, while Ravindra Jadeja was on his way back to the pavilion just two balls later.
Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav stemmed the bleeding with a 64-run partnership, during which Ashwin brought up his half-century, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Ben Stokes for 58, which came off 95 deliveries and included six boundaries.
Yadav went on to score 35 before he was removed by Adil Rashid, while Umesh Yadav also fell to Rashid after having made 13 as India were bowled out for 455.
Moeen and James Anderson picked up three wickets apiece, while Rashid snapped up two and Stokes and Stuart Broad chipped in with one wicket each.
Trailing by 455 runs, England lost captain Alastair Cook on the 15th ball of their innings as he was clean bowled by Mohammed Shami for two runs.
This marked just the second time in his Test career that he had been bowled by a pace bowler in Asia. The last time this happened was when he was cleaned up by Irfan Pathan on debut in Nagpur in March 2006.
Just when the tourists were on the verge of recovering from the loss of Cook, a moment of madness and miscommunication between Haseeb Hameed and Joe Root saw the former run out for 13.
Things went from bad to worse as Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Moeen fell in quick succession, which left England in a serious predicament at 80/5.
Stokes and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow ensured England did not lose any more wickets until stumps as they amassed an unbeaten 23-run partnership.
Stokes finished on 12 off 49 balls, which included one boundary, while Bairstow also struck one boundary during his innings of 12 not out, which came off 46 deliveries.
Ashwin was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Shami and Jayant Yadav claimed one wicket each.
England ended day two on 103/5 and will continue batting on Saturday at 09:30 local time or 04:00 GMT.
