“There is no reason why he couldn’t be playing in the Champions Trophy next year, or the World Cup in 2019”

England head coach Trevor Bayliss has said that pace bowler Stuart Broad still has a chance of representing England at the Champions Trophy next year and the 2019 World Cup.

Broad featured in two ODIs against South Africa in February this year as a replacement for the injured Liam Plunkett. Prior to that, he had not played any ODI cricket since the 2015 World Cup.

In terms of Twenty20 Internationals, the 29-year-old has not played the shortest format of the game since the 2014 World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Despite this, Bayliss reiterated that Broad still has a future when it comes to limited overs cricket.

“He’s keen to play at home in the 2019 World Cup, so we are aware of that,” he said. “There is no reason why he couldn’t be playing in the Champions Trophy next year, or the World Cup in 2019.

“But just at the moment, the selectors feel the bowlers who have been selected deserve their opportunity first.”

Broad was left out of England’s limited overs squads for the upcoming ODI and Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, but Bayliss feels that the seamer could be given another opportunity at any time.

“On this occasion, the team has been picked on merit – but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the career for him,” he said. “There’s bowlers in the team that still haven’t cemented their spot, that’s for sure. He’s there or thereabouts. He is certainly in the mix, with the Champions Trophy next year.”
