Australia’s pace duo of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh ripped through New Zealand’s top order to put the Baggy Greens in a commanding position at the end of the second day of the third Test in Adelaide.

Starting off the day on 54/2, Australia lost Adam Voges, Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh early on. Captain Steven Smith managed to score 53 off 114 balls, which included five boundaries, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Mark Craig.

Peter Siddle and Hazlewood were back in the pavilion soon after and Australia were left struggling on 116/8. But, following a controversial decision that saw Nathan Lyon get a life on zero even though HotSpot showed that he had edged the ball, Australia took the attack to New Zealand as Lyon and Peter Nevill amassed a 74-run partnership, during which Nevill brought up his half-century.

The stand between Lyon and Nevill was finally ended when Lyon was caught by Kane Williamson at gully off the bowling of Trent Boult for 34.

Despite being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot at the end of the first day, Mitchell Starc came in to bat and entertained the fans in Adelaide as he bashed 24 runs off just 15 balls before Nevill was brilliantly caught by debutant Mitchell Santner off the bowling of Doug Bracewell.

Nevill’s career-best knock of 66 came off 110 balls and included eight boundaries as Australia were bowled out for 224, which gave them a 22-run lead.

Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Boult and Craig snapped up two wickets apiece and Santner and Tim Southee chipped in with one wicket each.

Trailing by 22 runs, New Zealand struggled right from the get-go as they lost Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Williamson and captain Brendon McCullum in quick succession.

Ross Taylor managed to score 32 runs, but was unable to convert it into a bigger score as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Hazlewood.

Santner and BJ Watling managed to put together an unbeaten 18-run partnership before stumps was called.

Santner finished on 13 off 29 balls, which included one boundary, while Watling remained undefeated on seven off 32 deliveries, which also included one boundary.

Hazlewood was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Marsh claimed two.

New Zealand ended day two on 116/5 and will continue batting tomorrow at 14:00 local time or 03:30 GMT.
