India managed to dismiss South Africa opener Stiaan van Zyl and nightwatchman Imran Tahir after the Proteas skittled them out for 215 on the first day of the third Test in Nagpur.

India captain Virat Kohli would have been brooding over his decision to bat first as opener Murali Vijay was the top-scorer with 40 runs.

Vijay was one of five Indian batsmen not to convert their promising starts into bigger scores, with the other four being Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. As a result, India were bundled out for a disappointing score of 215.

Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Morne Morkel snapped up three and Tahir, Kagiso Rabada and Dean Elgar chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Trailing by 215 runs, van Zyl and Tahir were dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja for zero and four respectively.

Elgar and skipper Hashim Amla managed to amass an unbeaten two-run partnership before stumps was called.

Elgar finished on seven off 30 balls, which included one boundary, while Amla has yet to get off the mark.

Ashwin and Jadeja claimed one wicket each.

South Africa ended day one on 11/2 and will continue batting tomorrow at 09:30 local time or 04:00 GMT.
